The Springfield Model 1878, also known as the “Springfield Trapdoor,” was a single-shot, breech-loading rifle used by the U.S. military. It featured a hinged breechblock, opening like a trapdoor for loading a single .45-70 Government cartridge. Used in conflicts such as the Indian Wars and the Spanish-American War, it served as the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle for the U.S. Army.
